SUNDAY 03.27.16 – Prayer Tip

Daily Scripture

John 19:41-20:1: There was a garden in the place where Jesus was crucified, and in the garden was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish Preparation Day and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus in it. Early in the morning of the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.

John 20:19-22: It was still the first day of the week. That evening, while the disciples were behind closed doors because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, “ Peace be with you.” After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they were filled with joy. Jesus said to them again, “ Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.” Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

Prayer Tip

During these last 40 days of Lent at Resurrection, we’ve focused on John’s Gospel. We’ve dug a little deeper to see Jesus’ divinity. We looked beyond just living like the example he set for us to realize how we can let him live in us, transforming our lives today as he transformed the lives of those who chose to follow him two thousand years ago. We are Easter people, people of the Resurrection. With the darkness of the Crucifixion on Good Friday behind us, we now look forward and focus on the risen Christ this Easter. Join me in praying this prayer written by Rev. Michaela Youngson, a pastor in The Methodist Church in Britain:

When everything was dark
and it seemed that the sun would never shine again,
your love broke through.

Your love was too strong,
too wide,
too deep
for death to hold.

The sparks cast by your love
dance and spread
and burst forth
with resurrection light.

Gracious God,
We praise you for the light of new life
made possible through Jesus.
We praise you for the light of new life
that shone on the first witnesses of resurrection.
We praise you for the light of new life
that continues to shine in our hearts today.

We pray that the Easter light of life, hope and joy,
will live in us each day;
and that we will be bearers of that light
into the lives of others.
Amen.
